Thursday

Today they made us analyze some different neighborhoods in groups. That actually turned out to be much more delighting than it may sound to a bunch of students hungry for freedom in London. The neighborhood that was assigned to this group was Camden Town. To many people, Camden Town is also known as a huge marked filled with curious and exciting shops for colorful clothing and all kinds of delicious food to satisfy your taste buds. Below this you will find our analysis of the neighborhood.

Camden.
To find the marked, you have to walk all the way down the street from the station. The street is also filled with booths and shops and therefore some people never find the real marked. They simply get distracted by all the booths, or maybe they think that this actually is the marked. The neighborhood is definitely not sleeping. It’s filled with both citizens of London and tourists looking for experiences worth remembering. You don’t even notice the building because of all the booths. You might say that the street in itself is a sort of street art. On the facades of the buildings you will find signs and sculptures such as big shoes hanging on the walls to get the eager-to-buy tourists’ attention. It is a very colorful street, and you have to use all your senses to fully experience Camden Town.

Camden.

Because of all the alternative shops you will naturally also find all kinds of alternative people here. A guy from here told me that he once had to film scene for a project where he had to dress up as a Viking covered in blood, and carrying a chopped of head. No one was looking at him when he walked down the street of Camden town. That is a great example that people do not really care how you dress here. There is space for you no matter how you look.

Camden.
When you get tired of walking around, you can sit down at one of the pubs located on the street. Early on the street you will find eateries like Pret a Manger and altogether shops similar to what you will find lots of other places in London. As you walk down the street the shops gets more and more curious, and you will find pubs instead of restaurants.
As you may have figured out by now, Camden town is not a family neighborhood. It is there for shopping, not for living with your nuclear family. You will see no playgrounds and no schools or institutions here. When you look at the buildings and try to imagine them without all the sculptures and so on the facades are plane and dull compared with other buildings in London which are often old and exciting to look at. The neighborhood is alive because of the marked and all the different people. It is definitely worth a visit if you want to experience some of what makes London a town different from so many others.
